Fathers and Sons

Just finished watching Fathers & Sons (Baba Bai Ngai) featuring the following stars:

Synopsis (from Wikipedia)

Top-ranked market research manager Man Tin-Tsz (Bobby) is an expert at price comparison. Commonly nicknamed “the Honorable Min Jeong Ho”, his personal motto is “always be price-conscious”. Tsz who relishes his yuppie lifestyle has been longing for an early retirement. But the sudden return of his eight-year-old son seems to have completely shattered his dreams. Tsz has no experience in taking care of children and is totally clueless about how to look after his son. Luckily his ally-cum-rival Kam Mei-Tsun a.k.a "Amy" (Yoyo) is there to help and look out for him in every way. The pair gets to know each other better and gradually grow to be great buddies. Later Tsz discovers that Kam is actually the one referred to as “Platinum Dae Jang Geum”.

Tsz manages to find his godfather Ko Chi-Tim (Ha Yu) when he sees a beef ball. Tim has been trying hard to accommodate himself to his son Ko Ching (Wong Hei) but Ching has given full attention to his own daughter and shows no concern at all for Tim. Ching has focused too much on his daughter that he has completely disregarded his responsibility as a son and a husband. At the darkest moment in his life, Ching is lucky to still have Tsz and his short time girlfriend Law Sz-Hei a.k.a "Joey" (Tavia) by his side. In the meantime, Ching happens to discover a secret that his father has been hiding all these years, which was Ching wasn't his natural son. When Ching was just a baby, his natural parents couldn't afford to keep him since his mom was dying of a disease, so they made a binding contract with their neighbor Ko-Chi Tim in which Ko-Chi gets Ching and in return they get a huge amount of money. Ko-Chi fell in love with his step-son. As time past, the neighbor kept asking for more money to start a new business. Loving Ching so much, Ko-Chi took the savings of his family and gave it to the neighbor, and the neighbor was never heard of again. Ko-Chi never gambled away the money as Ching thought he had. Man-Tin Tsz was sued by Kam Mei-Tsun's ex-boyfriend for hitting him in the face. Throughout this time period, Man-Tin Tsz and Kam Mei-Tsun saw affection for each other and started dating.

Soon after when Ching's ex-wife comes back from the States, she wants her daughter back and told Ching she isn't his daughter and married him because she was pregnant and didn't know what to do. Ching was shocked, but he decided to follow his daughter to America and help with his ex-wife's dad's restaurant, breaking up with Joey. Before he left, Man Tin-Tsz's real dad had died and he had asked back for his dad's watch as it brought back many memories. He also promised his dad that as long as he lives, the beef ball Co. Mui Gay would continue to manufacture beef balls. As Ching left for the States, Man Tin-Tsz gives himself to Ko-Chi and offered to be his son. Ko-Chi accepted and Man Tin-Tsz started calling him Dad. With Mui Gay not doing well due to Kam Mei-Tsun's ex-boyfriend messing with their company, Ko-Chi gets a disease and went into a coma. Ching came back to the States with his ex-wife and Pui-Pui (we assume that he's back with her in the end) to take care of him in the hospital. Meanwhile, Man Tin-Tsz gave a touching report about father-and-son relationship to the magazine that everybody started buying Mui Gay's beefballs. Ko-Chi's situation gets worse and needs another immediate surgery, but the surgery ended up successful and he woke up from his coma, but lost all his memory. Throughout the time that Ko-Chi was in his coma, Kam Mei-Tsun's ex-boyfriend was charged for fraud in stocks and lost a lot of money trying to get Mui Gay off the market. Kam Mei-Tsun gets pregnant with Man Tin-Tsz and Ko-Chi could finally walk again.

Steps: FireFlies

One of the reasons why I like "Steps" so much is because of all the songs played in the drama. So damnnnnn niceeeee! This snippet here shows how Tsun and Sum Ying's relationship started... very romantic one... :)

FireFlies by Noella Choi

I don't know why you hesitate
Everytime you are near me
Is it that you fear
You might fall into something deep

Standing on the edge of the night
Feelings raging inside
But if you open your eyes

Can you see the fireflies dancing in the air
Like the stars up in the sky
Feel the gentle breeze caress star light
Oh, it's time to take to flight

Take my hands I'll lead you to the places where
I am sure you've never been
So just hold me close and we will go
This is how it all begins

Falling in love

(Repeat all over again)

Men Don't Cry

After finishing "Steps", I proceeded to watch "Men Don't Cry" (Gan Yan Kin) over the weekend. It is a 21-episode TVB comedy series with the following casts:
Synopsis from Wikipedia
With the support of the head of the Police Authority, Guangzhou's top villain Ho Kei-Kin or better known as Kan Yan Kin (Dayo Wong) has been riding roughshod over everyone around him. He is so manipulative that he has explored every possible means in his fight for a house with the buck-toothed owner Ling Yuk Tsui (Cecilia Yip).

Tsui is happy to have met the upright and honorable Wong Fei Hung (Lam Kar Wah). The pair quickly falls in love and even feels ready for marriage. Interested in stirring up trouble, Kin tries to recruit more students for his kung-fu school by portraying himself as the hero who has defeated one of the Ten Tigers of Guangdong Wong Kei-Ying.

For the sake of fairness, Hung is resolved to have a contest with Kin. Unfortunately, Kin manages to make Hung give in with the help of the ancestral tablet of his late father. Thinking that he is a hopeless coward, Tsui decides to break off her engagement to Hung.

Kin quickly grabs the chance and begins to woo Tsui. Tsui agrees to transfer her house to Kin after much persuasion from him. Kin shows his true colors as soon as he has secured the property. Tsui is left homeless and has to put up at Po Chi Lam, the martial arts club set up by Hung.

Kin has lost his power and soon becomes an object of contempt and hatred. With nowhere else to go, he decides to turn to Hung and asks to be his apprentice. Hung has tried his best to bring out the human side of Kin, for which he has received a lot of criticism from others. Despite Hung’s support, Kin does not repent and behaves even worse than before, leaving Po Chi Lam in a state of total chaos…

My verdict of the drama
C-R-A-P!!! Totally crappy with stupid storyline and lousy ending! I would rate it 1 out of 5 stars!

Stupid Storyline
It was about this Evil Kin who is EVIL and yet in the end, he solved a big illegal human transporting scam that was masterminded by the Head Police himself. In between... more stupidity were showcased like how:
  • When he was EVIL - people thought he was EVIL
  • When he was KIND - people still thought he was EVIL
  • When he pretended to be EVIL again (under the pretext of getting closer to the Leopard gang as an informant) - people thought he was KIND and tried their best to change him
  • When he was KIND (as in he solved the case of the illegal scam) - people misunderstood him to be EVIL

So the moral of the story is PERCEPTION = REALITY. If you wanna be evil, stay evil. If you wanna be KIND, stay kind. There are no in between.

Lousy Ending
It was a thorough waste of time and money to watch this drama and worst still, the ending has to be hanging!
  • Evil Kin disappeared from his town and was last seen as one of the judges for a beauty pageant where he let another bucktooth contestant win (means he still likes the buck-toothed lady from him town lor)
  • Wong Fei Hung is still in love with the ex-buck-toothed lady but ex-buck-toothed lady could not forget Evil Kin
  • The group of elders on board when the ship exploded miraculously stayed alive cos apparently they held on to planks and floated to a nearby village - WTF? All of them are OK despite the explosion?
  • No mention of everyone else in the movie

If it wasn't because of my bf, I wouldn't even watch this movie cos this Evil Kin is really ANNOYING. Unlike Stephen Chow who is comedic but likeable, this Evil Kin is comedic yet hateful... There were a few occasions where I had the urge to slap him even... Hehehehe...

Steps

Spent the entire Deepavali day watching the entire series of a TVB drama called "Steps" (Mou Dou Chuen Sing). It was a fantastic dance-oriented drama featuring the following stars:

Synopsis (from Wikipedia)
Dance lover Lee Sum Ying (Bernice Liu) is going to audition for a place in the Hong Kong Dance Company. Before the audition starts, she bumps into her brother Lee Lik Keung (Wayne Lai) and his colleague Ching Ka Tsun (Steven Ma) at a supermarket, where she is accidentally run over by Tsun’s trolley and hurts herself. Due to her arm injury, Sum Ying did not perform well in the audition and failed the assessment. At the invitation of Tsun’s mother, Sum Ying goes to teach Latin dance at a local community center, in the hope that she can save up enough money for further studies abroad.

Sum Ying has a very warm personality and is well-liked by many of her students. Her popularity eventually lands her a teaching job at a dance workshop, which makes another dance tutor, Ching Ka Man (Fala Chen) who is also Tsun's sister, incredibly jealous. Ka Man dislikes Sum Ying so much that she means to make things difficult for her in every possible way.

Yeung Sze Man (Kate Tsui), the daughter of Tsun’s boss, is appointed to take charge of the company. In order to improve staff morale, Sze Man has announced a series of reforms. She needs her staff to learn dancing so that they can get more physical exercise. Sum Ying is hired as the dance teacher of Tsun and his colleagues. Tsun, who has some knowledge in dancing, has soon resumed his interest in this expressive form of art.

Sum Ying and Tsun have gradually developed a close bond with each other and even decided to take part in an international dance competition as partners, but the pair’s relationship is put to the test when Tsun and Keung later fall out over business matters. The discord between the two men has put Sum Ying in dilemma…

My own synopsis on the ending
The drama revolves around several key characters where everyone is somehow related to someone else in one way or another.

Quick legend on the relationships diagram below:

  • Blue Lines = Siblings
  • Pink Lines = Best Buds
  • Red Lines = Couples
  • Yellow Lines = Rivalry
  • White Lines = Dance Partners
  • Grey Lines = Colleagues

All's well and the ending was a good one. Lee Lik Keung (Wayne Lai) married Yau Lam Lam (Claire Yiu) and Lam Lam's brother; Yau Sheung Dat (Stephen Wong) moved in to stay with Keung and Sum Ying.

The company that Sze Man was in charged off did successfully well and everyone got a 15% increment. Sze Man also continued to head the company. Although Sze Man's relationship with Mai Dik Sung (Matthew Ko) didn't work out given that the latter has a wife and a sick daughter, she eventually accepted Dat.

Ka Man learnt the lesson of the life when she realised that Anita (her mother's enemy) was only using her to cause tension / headache to her own mom. Out of anger, she accidentally pushed Anita down a fleet of stairs where Anita broke her leg. Ka Man was sentenced to a 9-month jail term.

The dispute between Tsun and Keung also ended when the misunderstandings were cleared and when Tsun helped persuade old Mr. Yeung (Sze Man's father) to re-hire Keung back (at much better terms...).

Despite the injury on her eyes that cause her momentarily blindness, Tsun and Sum Ying managed to complete the dance they started at the international dance competition. They even emerged triumphant as the judges honored their exceptional sportsmanship with a special prize. Best of all, Tsun finally proposed to Sum Ying at the end under fake "snow" flakes which both parties secretly planned (separately).

And that... was the end of the great new TVB drama. I would give it a rating of 4 1/2 out of 5 stars for:

  • Chemistry between Tsun and Sum Ying
  • Beautiful dance steps
  • Super nice soundtracks
  • Simple and easy going plot
And lastly, if there are any key learning from the drama, I would say they are as follows:
  • Mutual Trust
Drama: Ballroom dancing emphasizes on mutual trusts and synchronized steps to rhythm... In the drama, there was this part where Tsun was dancing with Sum Ying when the latter suddenly couldn't see (eyesight / corner issue from an accident), they could still complete the dance cos' Sum Ying trusted Tsun wholeheartedly that he'd lead her properly.

Learning: We often find it hard to wholeheartedly trust someone. One may often wonder if there is a hidden agenda behind the facade that the other person is projecting. But really, is there a need to be suspicious all the time? Perhaps it is good to be optimistic and be genuine to all parties to avoid unnessary misunderstandings.
  • Jealousy
Drama: Jealousy is one of the deadly sins that one should not practice. In the drama, Tsun's sister - Ka Man is soooo jealous of Sum Ying that she did stupid things that eventually landed her own ass in trouble.

Learning: Don't compare. Everyone is special in their own ways. The more you compare, the more you cause heartache to yourself. Just be happy and thankful that you are what you are.
  • Look Beyond the Surface
Drama: There was also this part where Ka Man went under her mother's rivalry's tutelage - Anita cos she thought Anita recognizes her ability as a dancer. In the end, she realised that Anita was only using her to get even with her own mother.

Learning: Learn to look beyond the surface. Not everything is what they seemed to be and of course, family comes first no matter what cos when you are in trouble, friends may abandon you but your family will be there to support you thru thick and thin.
