Men Don't Cry

After finishing "Steps", I proceeded to watch "Men Don't Cry" (Gan Yan Kin) over the weekend. It is a 21-episode TVB comedy series with the following casts:
Synopsis from Wikipedia
With the support of the head of the Police Authority, Guangzhou's top villain Ho Kei-Kin or better known as Kan Yan Kin (Dayo Wong) has been riding roughshod over everyone around him. He is so manipulative that he has explored every possible means in his fight for a house with the buck-toothed owner Ling Yuk Tsui (Cecilia Yip).

Tsui is happy to have met the upright and honorable Wong Fei Hung (Lam Kar Wah). The pair quickly falls in love and even feels ready for marriage. Interested in stirring up trouble, Kin tries to recruit more students for his kung-fu school by portraying himself as the hero who has defeated one of the Ten Tigers of Guangdong Wong Kei-Ying.

For the sake of fairness, Hung is resolved to have a contest with Kin. Unfortunately, Kin manages to make Hung give in with the help of the ancestral tablet of his late father. Thinking that he is a hopeless coward, Tsui decides to break off her engagement to Hung.

Kin quickly grabs the chance and begins to woo Tsui. Tsui agrees to transfer her house to Kin after much persuasion from him. Kin shows his true colors as soon as he has secured the property. Tsui is left homeless and has to put up at Po Chi Lam, the martial arts club set up by Hung.

Kin has lost his power and soon becomes an object of contempt and hatred. With nowhere else to go, he decides to turn to Hung and asks to be his apprentice. Hung has tried his best to bring out the human side of Kin, for which he has received a lot of criticism from others. Despite Hung’s support, Kin does not repent and behaves even worse than before, leaving Po Chi Lam in a state of total chaos…

My verdict of the drama
C-R-A-P!!! Totally crappy with stupid storyline and lousy ending! I would rate it 1 out of 5 stars!

Stupid Storyline
It was about this Evil Kin who is EVIL and yet in the end, he solved a big illegal human transporting scam that was masterminded by the Head Police himself. In between... more stupidity were showcased like how:
  • When he was EVIL - people thought he was EVIL
  • When he was KIND - people still thought he was EVIL
  • When he pretended to be EVIL again (under the pretext of getting closer to the Leopard gang as an informant) - people thought he was KIND and tried their best to change him
  • When he was KIND (as in he solved the case of the illegal scam) - people misunderstood him to be EVIL

So the moral of the story is PERCEPTION = REALITY. If you wanna be evil, stay evil. If you wanna be KIND, stay kind. There are no in between.

Lousy Ending
It was a thorough waste of time and money to watch this drama and worst still, the ending has to be hanging!
  • Evil Kin disappeared from his town and was last seen as one of the judges for a beauty pageant where he let another bucktooth contestant win (means he still likes the buck-toothed lady from him town lor)
  • Wong Fei Hung is still in love with the ex-buck-toothed lady but ex-buck-toothed lady could not forget Evil Kin
  • The group of elders on board when the ship exploded miraculously stayed alive cos apparently they held on to planks and floated to a nearby village - WTF? All of them are OK despite the explosion?
  • No mention of everyone else in the movie

If it wasn't because of my bf, I wouldn't even watch this movie cos this Evil Kin is really ANNOYING. Unlike Stephen Chow who is comedic but likeable, this Evil Kin is comedic yet hateful... There were a few occasions where I had the urge to slap him even... Hehehehe...
